The man considered to be the leader behind the plot to kill Mafioso Salvatore Montagna, as part of a power struggle within the Montreal Mafia, had a series of conditions attached to his statutory release. Montagna was killed on Nov. 24, 2011, and when Desjardins, 67, was sentenced in 2016 to 14 years for his role in the murder plot, he had a 78-month prison term left to serve. The serial number on the firearm had been filed off. The Montreal police found the gun in a backpack Mathieu Desjardins was carrying as he exited a downtown jewelry store on June 6, 2012.
