Mafia in Naples threaten ambulance drivers for using sirens and scaring away drug customers

Recent reports suggest that ambulance drivers in parts of Naples have asked for police escorts due to recent threats from the mafia.

Since the ambulance sirens are similar to those of police, the mafia finds their business being “disturbed.”  Naples ambulance drivers have started asking for these police escorts after numerous complaints from armed mafia teams threatening and even attacking ambulances for the use of sirens and light signals.

These reports aren’t new, but the situation has intensified due to the financial squeeze COVID-19 has put on the mafia’s business.  Reports show that they cannot afford to start losing customers due to mistaken sirens.

Explica tells us , “A traumatized ambulance driver told Italian media that he was driving an ambulance with the siren on, when he found himself flanked by two men on a motorcycle, one of whom hit the ambulance window and threatened him of death. The distraught ambulance staff ended up calling the police, asking them to provide a safe escort out of the neighborhood in question.”

“Didn’t they understand that they can’t use their siren here? Turn it off or we’ll shoot you,” the ambulance driver was allegedly told by a gunman.

Forty-two year old emergency doctor, Manuel Ruggerio, confirmed that ambulances do not use their sirens in certain parts of Naples due to this violence.

“We have already been ordered not to use the sirens in other neighborhoods, such as Sanità and Traiano, where the local ambulance turns on its siren only after leaving the area,” Ruggiero told local media.
