Track Stars: Listen to songs by Skrillex & Diplo, Maxwell and Jay Arner

2. Maxwell, Gods. Three years ago, Maxwell teased fans with a snippet of this wistful R&B ballad. They finally got to hear the fully fleshed out song in June, shortly before the release of blackSUMMERS’night, his first album in seven years. While Gods is a plea to a uncaring and deceitful lover, some of Maxwell’s lyrics (“You played the game of gods” and “I lay myself on the floor, give it up”) could be applied to the ongoing epidemic in the U.S. — of police officers fatally shooting black men.

3. Jay Arner, Like a Dracula. “Red wine, every day,” Arner coos on this ’80s-flavoured number, which mixes breezy guitars with bittersweet synths. Who can argue with such a sentiment? From the Vancouver tunesmith’s new album, Jay II. He’ll perform July 14 at The Almanac, 10351 Whyte Avenue, with Edmonton’s Tee-Tahs. Admission is $10. Doors open at 9 p.m.
